Tips & Tricks

The following tips and tricks will help you when using BOSCH Rotary Hammers.

Caution - cables
Before drilling in a wall, you should definitely check whether power lines, water or gas pipes run at the selected position. The best way to do this is with the metal detector from BOSCH

Clean work
If you collect drilling dust with an extraction device (accessories) while you are drilling or attach a small paper bag (or coffee filter) directly underneath the drill hole, you will save yourself a lot of work when clearing up afterwards.

When the hole turns out too big
If the diameter of a drill hole in the wall is too large for the wall plug, you can fill it with repair plaster and press in the wall plug.

Start slowly
Start drilling slowly – that is, with low speed, and gradually increase the speed. This enables you to start cleanly and prevents the drill bit from slipping away from the marked position.

Easier drilling in metal
On smooth surfaces such as metal, it is easy for the drill bit to slip slightly and then you drill in the wrong place. To avoid this, first knock a small hole in the metal. Normally you use a punch for this – a steel rod with a surface for hammer blows at one end and a sharp tip at the other. You then place the drill bit in this small hole. In the case of hard material, pilot drill with a small diameter drill bit and then complete your drilling with a drill bit with the desired diameter.

Hold the machine correctly
Always hold the rotary hammer in a straight position and press it perpendicular to the surface of the wall or of the work piece. With the BOSCH Rotary Hammer, however, you do not need to press the tool to any great extent against the material to be processed. The BOSCH Rotary Hammer works its own way through the material. If you use the auxiliary handle, you have better control when drilling. This is even easier with the drilling angle controller. You can apply this to the work piece and thus, for example, drill exactly horizontal into the wall. And if you wish to drill at an angle, you can also achieve precise results: the drilling angle controller can be set up to 15 degrees.

Plaster for tiles
An old tradesman's trick: on smooth tiles, drill bits slip away easily - but you can prevent this if you place masking tape on the drilling position beforehand.

Drive screws with the right bit
When driving screws, using the wrong bits leads to rapid destruction of the screw head. You should therefore ensure that you have not only the right shape (slotted, cross-head, hexagon socket or Torx) but also the right size of bit.
