Fitting a curtain rail in a concrete ceiling or lintel

Even DIY-enthusiasts with little experience can fit curtain rails. The profile rails made of plastic or metal are available in prefabricated form at specialist dealers or DIY markets. The rails have either one or two U-shaped running grooves in which the hooks for the curtains can be moved. The rails are fitted directly to the ceiling - the screw holes are usually already prepared. And with the power of a BOSCH Rotary Hammer the necessary are drilled quickly even if the ceiling is made of solid concrete. If the rail is not fitted from wall to wall, quarter-circle-shaped elements are placed in the rail as side blinds.

How to proceed

Use a broom to clean the ceiling.

You will need an assistant to help you fit the curtain rail. While one person holds the profile rail to the ceiling, the other uses a pencil to mark the pre-drilled fitting holes. NB: The rail should be positioned above the centre of the window and parallel to the wall. Use a fine-tooth saw to cut the rails if they are too long.

Use a masonry bit of at least 6 millimetres diameter to pre-drill the mounting holes in the ceiling. Then replace this with a drill bit of the same size as your wall plugs.

While you are drilling, your assistant should catch the drill dust with the vacuum cleaner. To do so, he or she should hold the vacuum cleaner nozzle as close as possible to the drilling point - but be careful: never get too close to the drill bit.

Press the wall plugs into the drilled holes and knock them in with few light hammer blows. Now, your assistant holds the profile rail to the ceiling. Align the screw holes of the curtain rail precisely over your drilled holes.

Screw in the fixing screws.

Many curtain rails are supplied with cover caps Insert these in the screw holes to conceal the screw heads. This looks better than open holes.
