The random orbit sander is an all-round talent: if you replace the sanding sheet with a polishing felt or polishing sponge, you can turn your random orbit sander into an effective polishing tool. This can be used to polish paint, brass or perspex, for example. 

Usually, a polishing paste is used together with a polishing felt disc. The polish builds up in the felt disc during the polishing process. You should use a new felt disc and a finer polish for every subsequent polishing run. The work piece surface must be carefully cleaned of previous polish between polishing runs because otherwise it builds up in the new felt disc.
