Whipping an old chest of drawers into shape

Have you got an old chest of drawers or display cabinet in the attic? It would be a shame to throw the old thing away, it has character unlike many modern pieces of furniture. In most cases, coloured layers of varnish that have also turned into cracks have gathered over the generations. These can be removed effortlessly using the BOSCH Multifunction Sander and the old thing can be given a new shine.

Proceed as follows:

Put rubber gloves on and protect your mouth and nose using a breathing mask. Now apply the paint remover using a wide paintbrush. Leave it to soak in for about half an hour. It is best to remove the paint outdoors or to take the chest of drawers to a commercial paint stripping service. This would solve the significant problem of environmentally-friendly disposal of paint remover and old paint.

Push off the softened paint using a spatula. Repeat this process until the wooden structure is uncovered.

If the chest of drawers has slats with decorated or profiled surfaces, it is better to use a clean wire brush or steel wool instead of a spatula. Caution: do not use steel wool on oak wood! Due to the tannic acid contained in the oak, the object would get black stains on it when it comes into contact with steel wool. Steel wool allows you to get into any joint and corner, and to remove the softened paint, even from recesses. However, should there still be paint on the chest of drawers, sand away the rest by hand.

Now sand down the chest of drawers using your BOSCH Multifunction Sander. With this all-round tool, you can easily get into the corners.

Even though the integrated dust extraction on the BOSCH Multifunction Sander leaves hardly any dust behind, clean the chest of drawers thoroughly again anyway. To do this, use a honey-soaked cloth. This is available in DIY stores or from specialist retailers.

Now apply a wood preservative using a wide natural-fibre paintbrush. This ensures that the wood can withstand all environmental conditions. Leave the wood preservative to dry thoroughly.

Once the preservative is dry, apply paint or wood varnish to the chest of drawers. If you use wood varnish, the structure of the wood remains visible. Always guide the paintbrush in the direction of the grain. Leave the paint or varnish to dry and then apply a second coat to the chest of drawers.
